Sizes vary a little between brands. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger.
Belt size is not your waist size. A belt is sized by the distance from the fold at the buckle to the middle hole. Because it wraps round your trousers, not your skin, it runs about two inches bigger than your trouser size. That puts the middle hole where you need it with room either way.

EU belt sizes are in centimetres to the middle hole. A 90 cm belt is the same as a 36 in belt.

From trousers
Read the waist size and add 2 in.
Measuring a belt that already fits is the most reliable method, because it captures how you like to wear it.
Dress, casual or reversible
Width and style differ. Compare them.
Slim and polished, with a small buckle.
Wider and sturdier for jeans and weekend wear.
Two colours in one, with a turning buckle.
Jeans loops are usually wide enough for a 1.5 in belt. Dress trousers often only take 1.25 in or narrower.

Take your trouser size, add two inches and you have your belt size. Choose the width for your trousers and you will get a belt that sits right with room to adjust.
