Video Size Calculator
Enter the length of the video, its video and audio bitrates, and your upload speed. The calculator gives the file size and how long the upload will take.
- MB and GB
- Video and audio split
- Upload time
Bitrates are in megabits (Mb) per second, sizes in bytes (B). There are 8 bits in a byte, which is why the formula divides by 8.
Video size is just bitrate multiplied by time. Resolution and frame rate do not set the size directly. They set the bitrate needed to look good, and the bitrate sets the size. A 10 minute video at 8 Mbps is about 600 MB whether it is 1080p or 4K, but the 4K version will look blocky at that rate.
Bitrates and sizes by resolution
Typical streaming and upload settings. Search for a resolution or bitrate.
| Resolution | Frame rate | Bitrate (Mbps) | Per minute | Per hour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 480p | 30 | 2.5 | 19 MB | 1.1 GB |
| 720p | 30 | 5 | 38 MB | 2.2 GB |
| 720p | 60 | 7.5 | 56 MB | 3.4 GB |
| 1080p | 30 | 8 | 60 MB | 3.6 GB |
| 1080p | 60 | 12 | 90 MB | 5.4 GB |
| 1440p | 30 | 16 | 120 MB | 7.2 GB |
| 4K | 30 | 35 | 263 MB | 15.8 GB |
| 4K | 60 | 53 | 398 MB | 23.9 GB |
| 4K ProRes 422 | 30 | 492 | 3.7 GB | 221 GB |
These are common targets for H.264. Newer codecs such as H.265 and AV1 reach similar quality at 30% to 50% lower bitrates, and so make smaller files.
Length and resolution
Four common bitrates. Slide the length.
Storage adds up fast. One hour of 4K at 35 Mbps fills about 16 GB, so a 128 GB card holds about eight hours of footage.
How to estimate video size
Three numbers and one formula. Step through the maths.
Add the bitrates
8 Mbps video + 0.192 Mbps audio = 8.192 Mbps.
Most editors and cameras show the bitrate in the export or recording settings. On a finished file, tools like MediaInfo show it.
H.264, H.265 or AV1
The codec changes how good a bitrate looks. Compare the main codecs.
Plays on almost every device and site. The safe default for sharing.
About 40% smaller for the same quality. Common on phones and 4K TVs.
Open codec used by YouTube and Netflix. Smallest files, slower to encode.
Use H.264 when you need to play anywhere. Use H.265 or AV1 to save space when your devices and platforms support them.
Before you export
Get the size you expect. Tick each item.
Tick each item as you go.
Platforms such as YouTube re-encode everything you upload. Upload at a higher bitrate than they stream so their copy starts from good quality.
What the result shows
Size, split and time. Each tile explains one result.
In MB or GB, ready to compare with limits.
How much the picture takes up.
Usually under 3% of the file.
Handy for longer recordings.
At your connection speed.
Sizes use decimal units, where 1 GB is 1,000 MB, as used by upload limits and storage makers. Windows shows sizes in binary units, so the same file looks about 7% smaller there.
Frequently Asked Questions
No question matches that search.
How big is a 1 minute 1080p video?
About 60 MB at 8 Mbps. Phone footage is often 100 to 130 MB per minute because phones record at higher bitrates.
How do I calculate video file size?
Multiply the total bitrate in megabits per second by the length in seconds, then divide by 8 for megabytes.
How big is a 1 hour 4K video?
About 15 to 25 GB at streaming bitrates, and hundreds of GB in editing formats such as ProRes.
Does resolution change file size?
Only through bitrate. Higher resolutions need higher bitrates to look sharp, which makes bigger files.
How can I make a video file smaller?
Lower the bitrate, use H.265 or AV1, or reduce the resolution.
What is the difference between Mbps and MB/s?
Mbps is megabits per second. MB/s is megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by 8 for MB/s.
How long will my video take to upload?
File size in megabits divided by your upload speed in Mbps. A 600 MB file at 20 Mbps takes about 4 minutes.
Plan storage and uploads with confidence
Find the bitrate, multiply by the length and divide by 8. Use the result to choose export settings, plan card and drive space and know how long an upload will take before you start it.
