Your foot

From 10 to 34

Measure both feet in the afternoon and use the longer one. Feet swell a little through the day.

Shoe sizes are based on the shoe last, not the foot. Makers add about 1.5 cm of room to your foot length to get the length of the last. UK and US sizes then count in thirds of an inch, called barleycorns, and EU sizes in two-thirds of a centimetre, called Paris points.

These are standard conversion values. Some brands, especially in sports and running shoes, size up to half a size differently, so check the brand chart if you are between sizes.

Watch sizes change with foot length

One centimetre is just over one full size. Slide the foot length to see how each system moves.

Because UK and US sizes step every 8.47 mm and EU sizes every 6.67 mm, the systems never line up exactly. That is why conversion charts sometimes disagree by half a size.

How to measure your feet at home

You need paper, a pencil and a ruler. Follow the steps for an accurate length.

Tape paper to the floor

Put the paper against a wall on a hard floor.

Measure both feet. Most people have one foot a few millimetres longer than the other, and you should always size for the longer foot.

Japan, Korea and China often label shoes by foot length in millimetres or centimetres, which is close to Mondopoint and the easiest system to understand.

Width matters as much as length. If your feet are wide, look for brands that sell in widths such as E, EE or Wide, or size up half a size in narrow styles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my foot for shoe size?

Stand on paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe and measure from the wall to the mark in centimetres.

What size is a 26 cm foot?

About UK 8, US men's 9, US women's 10 and EU 42.

How do I convert UK to US shoe size?

Add 1 for men and 2 for women. A UK 7 is a US men's 8 or a US women's 9.

What is the difference between men's and women's sizes?

In the US, women's sizes are about 1.5 to 2 sizes higher for the same foot. In the UK and EU the numbers are the same.

Should I size up for running shoes?

Many runners go up half a size, because feet swell on long runs and you need a thumb's width of room at the toe.

What if I am between sizes?

Pick the larger size for boots and walking shoes and the smaller one for shoes with laces you can tighten.

How much room should I leave in a shoe?

About 1 to 1.5 cm in front of the longest toe, which is roughly a thumb's width.

Measure once, buy with confidence

Measure both feet in the afternoon, use the longer one and convert it with the calculator. Check the brand's chart if it has one, and you will get the right size far more often than guessing from old shoes.
