Rider and riding style

From 120 to 210

From 30 to 140

From 4 to 15

Lengths suit most camber and hybrid boards. Volume-shifted and fish shapes are often ridden 4 to 8 cm shorter.

Weight bends the board, height only guides it. A snowboard is sized to flex under your weight, so two riders of the same height can need boards 6 cm apart. The old chin-to-nose rule is a rough start. Weight, riding style and boot size refine it.

Weight and riding style

A 175 cm rider at different weights. Slide the weight to see four styles side by side.

Park riders go shorter to spin and press. Powder riders go longer for float. The gap between the two is about 9 cm for the same person.

How to choose a snowboard size

Four quick decisions. Work through them in order.

Start with weight

Weight sets how much the board flexes. Find your weight in the chart.

When you try a board in the shop, stand it on its tail. For all-mountain riding the nose usually lands between your chin and nose.

Which riding style fits you

Style changes length and shape. Pick a style to see what changes.

Shorter and softer boards that spin easily and press on rails.

FlexSoft to medium
ShapeTwin

Most riders who ride the whole mountain and try the odd jump do best on an all-mountain board at the middle of the range.

Before you buy a board

Length is only the start. Tick these off in the shop.

Tick each item as you go.

Toe and heel overhang should be about 1 to 2 cm past each edge when the bindings are set at your usual angles.

What the result covers

Everything you need to narrow down boards. Each tile explains one result.

Length range

A 4 cm window around your ideal size.

Ideal length

The middle of the range for your style.

Waist width

Matched to your boot size to stop toe drag.

Riding style

Adjusts length for park, freeride or powder.

Ability

Beginners go a little shorter for easier turns.

Board makers print a recommended rider weight range on each length. Check your weight falls inside it, as that matters more than any formula.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size snowboard do I need for my height?

As a rough guide, multiply your height by 0.88. A 175 cm rider starts around 154 cm, then adjusts for weight and style.

Is weight or height more important?

Weight. The board is designed to flex under a set load, so a heavy rider on a short board sinks and chatters.

Should a beginner get a shorter board?

Yes, by 2 to 4 cm. A shorter board turns more easily and is easier to control at low speed.

When do I need a wide snowboard?

Usually from US men's boot size 11 upwards, or when your boots hang more than 2 cm over each edge.

What size snowboard for a 70 kg rider?

About 152 to 157 cm for all-mountain riding, depending on height.

Do women need different snowboard sizes?

Women's boards are usually softer and narrower for the same length. Use the same weight-based length.

Can I ride a board that is too long?

You can, but it will feel stiff and hard to turn, especially at low speeds and in tight trees.

Ride the board that fits you

Start from your weight, adjust for height, style and ability, and check the waist width against your boots. Then confirm your weight sits inside the maker's range for that length, and you will have a board that turns and holds an edge the way it should.
