Curtain Size Calculator
Measure your window, choose a heading and decide where the curtains should finish. The calculator gives the track length, the width of each curtain and the drop from the track.
- Track and fabric width
- Sill, below sill or floor
- Ready-made match
Measure the window recess or frame in at least three places and use the widest width and the longest height.
Curtains need to be wider than the window, and wider again than the track. A track should run about 15 cm past each side of the window so the curtains can clear the glass. The fabric then needs to be one and a half to two and a half times the track width, depending on the heading, so the curtains still look full when closed.

| Width (cm) | Width (in) | Drop (cm) | Drop (in) | Suits track up to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 117 | 46 | 137 | 54 | 120 cm |
| 117 | 46 | 183 | 72 | 120 cm |
| 168 | 66 | 137 | 54 | 180 cm |
| 168 | 66 | 183 | 72 | 180 cm |
| 168 | 66 | 229 | 90 | 180 cm |
| 229 | 90 | 183 | 72 | 240 cm |
| 229 | 90 | 229 | 90 | 240 cm |
| 229 | 90 | 274 | 108 | 240 cm |
Ready-made widths are for each curtain, measured flat. A pair of 168 cm wide curtains suits a track of up to about 180 cm with a pencil pleat.
Window width and fabric
By heading style. Slide the window width.
Wave and pinch pleat headings need the most fabric but hang in the neatest folds. Eyelets need the least and suit modern rooms.
How to measure for curtains
Track first, then drop. Step through it.
Measure the window
Width and height of the frame or recess.
Fit the track or pole before you measure for the drop. It is much easier to measure from something that is already there.
Sill, below sill or floor
Length changes the look of the room. Pick a length.
Ends 1 cm above the sill. Neat and practical over radiators and window seats.
Ends about 15 cm below the sill. A common choice for bedrooms.
Ends just above the floor. Best for tall windows and living rooms.
Floor-length curtains make a ceiling look higher. Stop them 1 cm above the floor so they do not drag, or add 5 to 10 cm for a pooled look.
Before ordering curtains
A few checks save a return. Tick each item.
Tick each item as you go.
Lined and thermal curtains are heavier, so check that your track or pole and its brackets are rated for the weight.
What you get
Every measurement for ordering. Each tile explains one result.
Width and drop of each curtain.
Window plus overlap each side.
Track times the heading fullness.
From the track to where you chose.
The nearest stock size.
If you are between two ready-made sizes, go wider rather than narrower. Extra width just adds fullness.
Frequently Asked Questions
No question matches that search.
How wide should curtains be?
Each curtain in a pair should be at least as wide as the track for eyelets, and about the full track width or more for pleated headings.
How much wider than the window should a curtain track be?
About 15 to 20 cm each side, so 30 to 40 cm wider in total.
How do I measure the drop for curtains?
From the top of the track or the bottom of the pole rings down to where you want the curtain to end.
What size curtains for a 120 cm window?
A 150 cm track with a pencil pleat needs about 300 cm of fabric, so a pair of 168 cm wide curtains works well.
Should curtains touch the floor?
Usually they finish 1 cm above. Pooled curtains add 5 to 10 cm and rest on the floor.
What is curtain fullness?
How much wider the flat fabric is than the track. Higher fullness gives deeper folds.
Can I hang curtains higher than the window?
Yes. Mounting the track higher than the frame makes the window and the room look taller.
Curtains that fit the first time
Fit the track, measure the drop and let the heading set the width. With the right fullness and length, ready-made or made-to-measure curtains will hang well and close fully.
