Score 5 means you can feel the ribs easily and see a waist from above.

Body shape tells you more than the scale. On the 9-point body condition scale, 5 is ideal and each point above adds about 10% of extra weight. A 6 kg cat scoring 7 has an ideal weight of about 5 kg and needs roughly 190 kcal a day while it slims.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a healthy weight for a cat?

Most domestic cats are healthiest between about three and a half and five and a half kilograms, but frame size matters, so use the body score.

How do I know if my cat is overweight?

If you cannot easily feel the ribs or see a waist from above, it is likely overweight.

How many calories does a cat need?

About two hundred to two hundred and fifty a day for a typical neutered adult.

How fast should a cat lose weight?

No more than about one per cent of its body weight a week.

How much dry food should I feed my cat?

Around fifty to sixty-five grams a day for an average cat, depending on the food.

What is a body condition score?

A hands-on check of ribs, waist and belly, scored from one, very thin, to nine, obese.

Do big breeds weigh more?

Yes. Large breeds can be healthy at seven kilograms or more, so the body score matters most.

A healthy shape for life

Use the body score, not just the scale, and adjust food gradually towards a healthy weight.
