Coated papers are denser, so they are thinner than uncoated paper of the same GSM.
GSM is the weight of one square metre of paper. An A4 sheet is one sixteenth of a square metre, so 80 gsm A4 weighs 5 g a sheet and 2.5 kg a ream. Heavier paper is thicker too. 80 gsm copy paper is about 0.1 mm thick and 300 gsm card about 0.37 mm.
