For walls, enter the height as the width and take off big openings such as doors and windows.

Tiles are counted by area, then rounded up for cuts. Divide the area by the size of one tile plus its joint. Then add 10% for cuts and breakages, or 15% if you lay the tiles diagonally or in a herringbone pattern.

Larger tiles waste more at the edges of small rooms. Use 15% for tiles over 600 mm.

Tile size and count

A 4 × 3 m floor. Slide the tile size.

The floor is drawn with the tiles laid in a brick pattern. Some tiles are shaded so you can count them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out how many tiles I need?

Divide the area by the area of one tile plus its joint, then add 10% for cuts.

How much waste should I allow for tiles?

About 10% for straight laying and 15% for diagonal, herringbone or large tiles.

How many tiles in a square metre?

About 11 of 300 × 300 mm tiles, or nearly 3 of 600 × 600 mm with joints.

How much grout do I need?

It depends on tile size, joint width and depth. Small tiles with wide joints use the most.

Should I use the same tile size on walls and floors?

You can, but floor tiles must be rated for floors, and heavy tiles on walls need strong adhesive.

Do bigger tiles make a room look bigger?

Usually, because there are fewer grout lines.

How many spare tiles should I keep?

A few, from the same batch, for repairs later.

Tiles counted, not guessed

Measure the area, choose the tile and joint and add waste for the pattern. Buy whole boxes from one batch and keep a few spares.
