Land Size Calculator
Enter the length and width of a rectangular piece of land in feet, metres or yards. You get the area in acres, hectares, square feet and square metres, plus the total price if you add a rate per acre.

For rectangles and squares. Survey plans are always more accurate than tape measurements on uneven ground.
An acre is 43,560 square feet. That is a fixed area, not a fixed shape. A square acre measures about 208.7 feet on each side, but a strip 66 feet wide and 660 feet long is also exactly one acre. A hectare is larger, at 10,000 square metres or 2.471 acres.

Estate agents in the UK and US mostly quote acres. Most of the rest of the world uses hectares or square metres. Local units such as the bigha, kanal or marla vary by region.
Picture the size of your land
Areas are hard to imagine as numbers. Slide the acreage and compare it to familiar spaces.
A full-size football pitch is about 1.76 acres and a tennis court about 0.065 acres. Comparing with a space you know is the quickest way to judge whether a listing is a garden or a field.
How to measure land
You need two straight measurements for a rectangle. Follow these steps on site.
Find the corner markers
Look for boundary pins, posts or fence lines shown on the deed plan.
If the corners are not square, measure both diagonals. Equal diagonals mean a true rectangle. If they differ, split the land into triangles or use the plot size calculator.
Acres, hectares or square metres
Which unit you meet depends on where you are. Compare the three main land units.
Used in the US, UK, Canada and parts of Asia for farmland and building plots.
The metric unit for land, used for farms, forests and planning across most of the world.
Used for house plots, building footprints and anything under a hectare.
Land registries in most countries record area in square metres or hectares even where sellers advertise in acres, so it helps to be comfortable with both.
Before you buy land
Size is the start of the checks. Work through these with your solicitor or agent.
Tick each item as you go.
Usable area can be much smaller than the title area once you remove steep slopes, flood zones, easements and building setbacks.
One measurement, every unit
The calculator returns all the common land units. Each tile explains one result.
The usual unit for selling land in the US and UK.
The metric land unit, 10,000 m².
Useful for building plots and fencing estimates.
Used on land registry records in most countries.
Area multiplied by your price per acre.
If you paste the result into a valuation, round acres to two decimals and square feet to the nearest whole number. That matches how most listings and surveys quote land.
