Side drop is how far the blanket hangs past the mattress edge.
A blanket covers the mattress top and hangs down the sides. Add twice the side drop to the mattress width and the foot drop to its length. A queen mattress, 60 × 80 in, with a 14 in side drop and 10 in at the foot needs 88 × 90 in, so a full/queen blanket of 90 × 90 in.
