Jackets are sized by chest, then by length. A men's suit jacket labelled 40R fits a 40 inch chest in a regular length. Women's jackets follow dress sizes based on the bust. Height decides whether you need short, regular or long sleeves and body.

Most jackets are cut with about 10 to 15 cm of ease over your chest, so the jacket itself measures more.
How to measure for a jacket
Chest and height. Step through it.
Arms relaxed
By your sides.
Shoulders matter as much as chest for fit. The shoulder seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder bone.
Slim, regular or classic fit
Same size, different cut. Compare them.
Close through the chest and waist.
Room to move with a clean line.
Fuller cut through the body.
If you are between sizes, choose the larger for classic fits and the smaller for slim fits, then tailor.
