Fitting Winter Boots and Wellies for Kids
Boots and wellies fit differently to everyday shoes. Size them with room for thicker socks.

Parents tend to buy boots and wellies in a rush when the weather turns. Five checks help them fit as well as everyday shoes.
Allow for thicker socks
Measure your child’s feet in the socks they will wear with the boots. Thick socks add width and length.
Wellies: snug at the heel
Most wellies have no fastenings, so the heel lifts as your child walks. Leave about a thumb’s width at the toe and stay within half a size of the shoe size. A full size up makes wellies flap and rub.
Winter boots: check the width
Insulated boots give less than leather shoes. Look for adjustable straps, laces or a wide opening if your child takes a wide fitting.
Start with the calculator
Measure with a foot gauge, then use the size calculator for your child’s size and width. Try each boot on before you settle on it.
Check mid-season
Feet keep growing through winter. Measure again every 2 months, as in our measuring schedule.
